A rent increase notice tells a tenant in writing that their rent will go up, by how much and starting when. Most states require advance written notice, and some cities limit how much and how often rent can increase.

How to fill it out

  1. Enter your name and address and the tenant’s name and address.
  2. Fill in the current rent, new rent, increase amount and percent.
  3. Set the effective date and note how many days of notice you are giving.
  4. Edit the letter body and sign.
  5. Deliver the notice the way your state requires and keep proof.

Tips

  • Check your state’s minimum notice period — often 30 to 90 days depending on the increase.
  • Rent control or stabilization rules may limit increases in some cities.
  • A fixed-term lease usually locks rent until it ends.
  • Do not raise rent in retaliation or for discriminatory reasons.
