Engineering Paper: uses, sizes and printing tips
Engineering paper (an engineering computation pad) has a 5 × 5 grid with heavier inch lines and a header row for name, course, date and page number. Engineering students use it for homework, calculations and free-body diagrams; keep it gray for laser printers or switch to green for the classic look.
How to print it
- Choose the paper size (US Letter, A4, Legal, A5 or Half Letter) and portrait or landscape — the page updates as you change settings.
- Pick the square size, heavy lines every 4, 5 or 10 squares, and whether the grid has a border.
- Add a title or a name/date header if you want, or keep the page plain.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” (100%) and turn off “Headers and footers”.
Tips
- Number every page in the Page box — instructors expect it on engineering homework.
- The grid always ends on whole squares and is centered on the page, so nothing is cut off at the edges.
- Turn off “Fit to page” in the print dialog — otherwise the printer shrinks the squares slightly.
FAQ
Why is engineering paper green?
Traditional pads are light green with the grid printed on the back, so it shows through faintly and does not distract from the work. Choose Line color: Green for the look.
Can I change the header?
Choose another header in the panel, or set it to None and type a title.
How do I check that the squares printed at the right size?
Measure 10 squares with a ruler. At 100% scale, 10 squares of 1/4 inch measure exactly 2.5 inches, and 10 squares of 5 mm measure 5 cm.
