Graph Paper: uses, sizes and printing tips
Standard 4 × 4 graph paper (quad ruled): 1/4 inch squares in light gray, centered on the page so it always ends on whole squares. Change the square size from 1 mm to 2 inches, add heavy lines every 4, 5 or 10 squares, or switch to A4 or landscape.
How to print it
- Choose the paper size (US Letter, A4, Legal, A5 or Half Letter) and portrait or landscape — the page updates as you change settings.
- Pick the square size, heavy lines every 4, 5 or 10 squares, and whether the grid has a border.
- Add a title or a name/date header if you want, or keep the page plain.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” (100%) and turn off “Headers and footers”.
Tips
- Drawing to scale? With 1/4″ squares, one square = 1 foot gives a convenient floor-plan scale of 1/4″ = 1′.
- The grid always ends on whole squares and is centered on the page, so nothing is cut off at the edges.
- Turn off “Fit to page” in the print dialog — otherwise the printer shrinks the squares slightly.
FAQ
What is 4×4 or quad ruled graph paper?
Graph paper with four squares per inch, so each square is 1/4 inch. It is the most common graph paper in American schools.
Can I print it without the name line?
Yes. Set Header to None for a plain grid.
How do I check that the squares printed at the right size?
Measure 10 squares with a ruler. At 100% scale, 10 squares of 1/4 inch measure exactly 2.5 inches, and 10 squares of 5 mm measure 5 cm.
