Mizige Calligraphy Grid Paper: uses, sizes and printing tips
Mizige (米字格, “rice-character grid”) squares have a dashed center cross plus both diagonals, like the character 米. The eight guide lines are favored for brush calligraphy and for learning the exact angles of strokes.
How to print it
- Choose the paper size (US Letter, A4, Legal, A5 or Half Letter) and portrait or landscape — the page updates as you change settings.
- Choose the style of practice squares (tianzige, mizige, plain, genkō yōshi or wongoji) and the square size.
- Add a title or a name/date header if you want, or keep the page plain.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” (100%) and turn off “Headers and footers”.
Tips
- Print on thicker paper if you use ink so it does not bleed through.
- Write each character centered in its square, using the dashed guides to balance the strokes.
- Start with 15–20 mm squares while learning stroke order and shrink to 8–10 mm for everyday writing.

Can I use a brush?
Yes — choose 25 or 30 mm squares and print on thicker paper for brush and ink.
Is there a version without diagonals?
Use tianzige paper, or set Style to Tianzige.
Can I use this for Japanese, Chinese and Korean?
Yes. The grids are writing-system neutral — choose the style your teacher uses.
