Guidelines for italic hand with a broad-edge pen: the x-height is five nib widths, ascenders and descenders four, and slant lines lean about 7° from vertical. A ladder of nib-width squares at the start of each row shows the proportions for your pen — choose 1.5 mm to 6 mm.
Choose your nib width (for example 3.8 mm for a Pilot Parallel 3.8). The rows resize automatically.
Small squares as wide as your nib stacked like stairs — calligraphers draw them with the pen to measure letter height.
From top to bottom: the ascender line (dashed), the waistline (top of the x-height), the baseline (darker) and the descender line (dashed). Small letters sit between the waistline and the baseline.
