Lined Paper A4: uses, sizes and printing tips
This A4 lined paper uses 8 mm line spacing with a margin line, the ruling found in most UK, European, Australian and Asian exercise books (often called wide feint). Switch to 6 or 7 mm for narrow feint, or to 10 mm for younger pupils.
How to print it
- The page opens on A4 (210 × 297 mm) with 8 mm line spacing and a margin line — 34 lines per page, the usual “wide feint” exercise-book ruling.
- For narrow feint choose 7.1 mm or 6.4 mm spacing; for younger pupils choose 10 mm.
- Printing in the US? Switch Paper size to US Letter and the lines are redrawn for the shorter page instead of being scaled.
- Click Print / Save as PDF. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” (100%) and turn off “Headers and footers” so the spacing stays exact.
Tips
- Add a Name, Date & Subject header for worksheets and exam answer sheets.
- Check that your printer tray and the print dialog are both set to A4 — a mismatch is the most common reason lines get cut off at the bottom.
- Pair it with the 5 mm graph paper for maths and science workbooks.
FAQ
What does “feint ruled” mean?
Feint ruled paper simply has light, thin lines. In the UK, “wide feint” usually means 8 mm spacing and “narrow feint” 6–7 mm.
Will A4 lined paper print on US Letter?
Choose US Letter under Paper size and the lines are redrawn for the shorter, wider page — no scaling or cut-off lines.
Will the line spacing be exact when printed?
Yes, as long as the print scale is 100% (Actual size). The lines are drawn as vector graphics, so they stay sharp and exactly spaced on any printer.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is completely free with no sign-up and no download. Change the settings, print it or save it as a PDF, and bookmark the address — your settings are stored in the link.
